Did you know Changkat Changi Secondary School actually began its life in 1966, not here, but on a small hill at Jalan Tiga Ratus? “Changkat” means “small hill” in Malay, and “Changi” refers to the mythical Changi Tree. Changkat Changi Secondary School’s first students came not only from the mainland but also from the kampongs on Pulau Ubin and Pulau Tekong. Imagine these students taking a ferry each morning to reach their classrooms, returning home only on the evening ferry. Originally, Changkat Changi was an integrated school with English, Mandarin, and Bahasa Melayu streams. Reflecting Singapore’s shift towards English, the other streams were phased out, making English the primary language of instruction by 1973. In the early days, the curriculum emphasized technical studies to support the newly independent nation. Fast forward to 2001, Changkat Changi Secondary School moved to its current modern 3.3-hectare campus here on Simei Street 3, complete with handicap-friendly facilities. The school boasts a strong sports tradition. In the 1970s, Changkat Changi was a Track & Field powerhouse, holding the title of Overall Divisional Champions for Girls for a decade. Even today, sports thrive at Changkat Changi. In 2019, the school’s volleyball team celebrated a third-place victory in the National School Games. Beyond athletics, students can explore a variety of CCAs including badminton, basketball, chess, choir, Chinese orchestra, floorball, football, Infocomm Club, National Cadet Corps (Land), Robotics Club, volleyball, and Wushu. Changkat Changi has also embraced specialized programs. The “SOAR” program (Student centered Opportunities for AeRospace Industry) focuses on aerospace engineering. The “Service and Leadership, Through School to Nation” program empowers students to develop leadership skills by engaging with the community.
