Have you ever wondered about the hidden history of Chiswick School? Right here on Burlington Lane stands a building steeped in educational tradition. Chiswick School isn’t just a school it’s a living testament to London’s evolving educational landscape.

Chiswick School’s story begins long before its official opening in 1968. In fact two separate schools existed on this very site. Chiswick County School for Girls opened in 1916. Chiswick County School for Boys followed in 1926. These schools later merged becoming the co-educational Chiswick County Grammar School in 1966.

Rory K Hands played a pivotal role. He became headmaster of the boys’ school in 1963. He oversaw the merger. He even steered the subsequent transformation into Chiswick Comprehensive School in 1968. This involved merging with two nearby secondary modern schools. The new school used two sites. The lower school was at Staveley Road. The upper school remained on the original grammar school site at Burlington Lane.

The school faced challenges. In 1973 some Staveley Road buildings were deemed unsafe. They had to be closed. The school temporarily operated in a ‘village of huts’. Remarkably headmaster Hands boosted morale with a Gilbert and Sullivan production. He retired in 1975 after suffering several heart attacks. Dame Helen Metcalf provided strong leadership from 1988 to 2001. The school’s name changed to Chiswick Community School sometime after 1978. It reverted to Chiswick School when it became an academy in 2012.

Chiswick School’s history is rich. It’s a story of mergers challenges and enduring commitment to education. It’s a place where generations of students have learned and grown. Phil Collins a famous musician even attended Chiswick School. This vibrant institution continues to shape the lives of young people in West London. The legacy of Chiswick School extends far beyond its walls.
