“Can you believe Napoleon’s vision? ” I ask my audience. We stand at the beginning of the Boulevard des Pyrénées in Pau. Before us stretches a magnificent promenade. It offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Pyrenees mountains.
The Boulevard des Pyrénées is more than just a road. It’s a testament to Pau’s history and its unique relationship with its stunning landscape. This boulevard is a symbol of the close bond between the town and its breathtaking surroundings. Its story reflects Pau’s rise as a popular 19th-century resort town.
Napoleon I first envisioned this spectacular viewpoint. He wanted Pau to showcase the majestic Pyrenees. However the boulevard’s construction took decades of discussion and planning. It wasn’t completed until 1899. Adolphe Alphand a collaborator of Baron Haussmann played a crucial role. Alphand famously redesigned Paris under the Second Empire. He even visited Pau in 1891. He proposed a stunning design. His vision included a promenade. It was to be comparable to Nice’s Promenade des Anglais. Unfortunately Alphand died before his Pau project was complete.
The completed Boulevard des Pyrénées links the Parc du Beaumont and the Château de Pau. It forms the southern edge of Pau’s city center. Imagine the elegant hotels that once lined this boulevard. The Hôtel de Gassion the Hôtel de France and the grand Hôtel Beauséjour. Many are gone now. The Hôtel de Cadaval and the Hôtel Boscary de Romaine remain. They stand as silent reminders of Pau’s affluent past.
The boulevard also features an orientation table. Fifty-four plaques help visitors identify the various Pyrenean peaks. They can be seen on a clear day. In winter or at dawn and dusk the views are especially spectacular. The peaks visible range from the Pic du Midi de Bigorre to the Pic d’Anie. The Pic du Midi d’Ossau stands prominently in the background.
The Pau funicular built in 1908 adds to the Boulevard’s charm. It connects the town center to Pau’s railway station.
The Boulevard des Pyrénées is more than just a beautiful walk. It represents a blend of imperial ambition urban planning and the stunning natural beauty of the French Pyrenees. It has continued to evolve for over a century. It’s a place where history breathtaking views and modern amenities converge. The city authorities even aim for UNESCO World Heritage status.
