For ten years, he was her right hand in the creation of the magical Tarot Garden, a place where art explodes from the earth in a riot of color and form. Ricardo, they say, was like a cat himself – proud, mysterious, and alluring.
When he died tragically young, taken by the AIDS epidemic that ravaged a generation, Niki was heartbroken. She poured her grief into creating this vibrant, whimsical cat sculpture that sits atop his grave. It’s a kaleidoscope of colors, textures, and emotions – a reflection of the man it memorializes. Notice the heart-shaped spots and playful mosaics. They speak of Ricardo’s warmth, his vibrancy, his zest for life. Niki, haunted by his death, vowed to keep his memory alive. She even created a twin of this very cat for the Tarot Garden, so Ricardo could forever be by her side, at least in spirit.
