Nestled along the Elbe Valley, Alt-Radebeul awaits. This charming hamlet is the heart of Radebeul. It’s the original village, first mentioned in 1349 as Radebǜl. Imagine a quaint, west Slavic round village. It originally had eight, then twelve, farms. These farms formed the “Am Kreis” settlement. These twelve farm owners, the original members of the Altgemeinde (old community), were known as the “Twelve Apostles”. Alt-Radebeul has witnessed dramatic events. In both 1627 and 1782, devastating fires nearly destroyed the entire village. Each time, the resilient residents rebuilt. The arrival of the railway in 1860, connecting Leipzig and Dresden, marked a turning point. This further spurred Alt-Radebeul’s growth and development. This growth continued into the 20th century. By 1900, Alt-Radebeul boasted a new town hall and a new train station. The old village center became less central as the area north of the railway line, up to Meißner Straße, flourished. Alt-Radebeul became part of the larger town of Radebeul in 1924 when Radebeul was granted city rights. Then, in 1935, Radebeul merged with Kötzschenbroda, forming the larger city of Radebeul that we know today. Alt-Radebeul retains its historic charm. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of its people. Come, explore the heart of Radebeul, and discover the story etched in its streets and buildings.
