During the construction of the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport in the 1970s, construction crews stumbled upon a remarkable discovery. They unearthed the bones of a prehistoric giant: a 25-foot-long plesiosaur. This marine reptile, with its lizard-like body and powerful flippers, had patrolled the waters that once covered North Texas some 70 million years ago. The plesiosaur, weighing almost 10,000 pounds, became a local celebrity. After careful restoration, it was proudly displayed at the Braniff International terminal at DFW Airport in 1975. Passengers waiting for their flights could marvel at this glimpse into the distant past. Eventually, the plesiosaur was moved to the Shuler Museum of Paleontology at Southern Methodist University in 2014. Although not currently on display due to space constraints, the fossil stands as a testament to the ancient history hidden beneath our feet. It serves as a reminder that even in the hustle and bustle of a modern airport, echoes of prehistoric giants can still surprise and amaze us.
