“A beacon of hope on the horizon.” So stands Vihara Dewi Samudera, a testament to the enduring spirit of faith. This vibrant place of worship, often called Klenteng Tian Hou Gong, beckons us to explore its rich history. Vihara Dewi Samudera is nestled in Bandengan Selatan, Jakarta. It was built in 1784. The main deity is Dewi Ma Zu Po, brought here by Chinese immigrants, especially those from Fujian in Southern China. These travelers carried their culture and beliefs across the sea, establishing Vihara Dewi Samudera as a spiritual anchor in their new land. Ma Zu Po, originally Lin Mo, was born around 960 AD in Pu Tian county. Her story is shrouded in mystery. She transformed into a goddess revered for her protection. Seafarers, merchants, and those facing calamities like floods, droughts, and diseases sought her favor. Even the famed Admiral Zheng He, also known as Chen Ho, invoked her protection on his voyages. Vihara Dewi Samudera is more than just a shrine to Ma Zu Po. She is accompanied by two other deities: the Thousand Li Eye and the Wind Ear gods. Ma Zu Po is also a protector of women, especially during pregnancy and childbirth. She is also seen as a deity of intelligence, guiding children in their studies and exams. The annual celebration for Ma Zu Po takes place on the 23rd day of the 3rd lunar month. A local legend tells of Zu Shi Gong’s unrequited love for Ma Zu Po. Scorned, he cursed her birthday with rain to diminish her beauty. Ma Zu Po retaliated, cursing his birthday with strong winds to dishevel him and undermine his authority. Zu Shi Gong, originally Chen Ying, was born in Yong Chun county in 1044 AD. He resides in the Tanjung Kait temple in Tangerang, built in 1742. Known as the Black Face God or the Broken Nose God, he is associated with rain, problem-solving, medicine, and agriculture. His celebration falls on the 6th day of the 11th lunar month. Vihara Dewi Samudera stands as a symbol of resilience, a place where stories and faith intertwine, inviting us to reflect on the enduring power of belief.
