Established in 1964 the Gereja Kristen Indonesia Cawang began as a small mission post. It blossomed from humble beginnings. The initial services were held in the home of S Basuki. His home was located at Jalan Cawang Baru Tengah No 36. The mission post quickly gained popularity. Attendance swelled. In 1964 around 20 people attended services. By 1965 this number increased to 35. A year later 50 people filled the small home.
The growing congregation needed a larger space. The Gereja Kristen Indonesia Cawang applied for land from the governor. Unfortunately this request was denied. However God had other plans. An anonymous Christian donor offered land. This was to build a new church building. This land was located in the Cawang Kapling area. Pastor Jusuf Harun worked quickly. He met with S Basuki to begin the process of fundraising.
The fundraising proved difficult. Miraculously the father of the anonymous donor stepped in. He generously funded the construction of the church building. On September 28 1966 the first stone was laid. The ceremony was performed by the Cawang village head Ali Muchtar.
Finally on November 19 1967 the Gereja Kristen Indonesia Cawang officially became a church. This was overseen by Pastor IT Salim. The church’s address became Jalan Cawang Baru Tengah No 30. Twelve members were confirmed as the inaugural church council. The new church was formally dedicated on December 6 1967. This was by Pastor C Suleeman the chairman of the Synod.
The Gereja Kristen Indonesia Cawang was now an independent church. It began establishing various ministries. These included women’s youth children’s and youth ministries. They also established outreach evangelism and diaconal ministries. The church continues its important work. It serves the community of Cawang and beyond. The Gereja Kristen Indonesia Cawang stands as a testament to faith. It reflects the dedication of its members and the unwavering grace of God.
