Marvelous Marseille’s Saint-Michel Church stands before you. Its neo-Gothic style is a stunning sight. This is not just any church. It’s the first neo-Gothic church built in Marseille. Bishop Eugène de Mazenod spearheaded its creation in 1848. He established the Saint-Michel parish. He then commissioned the talented architect Pierre Marius Béringier. Béringier’s vision brought this architectural masterpiece to life.

The cornerstone was laid on April 18 1850. Bishop de Mazenod himself presided over the ceremony. The mayor and city council members were also present. Funding was a challenge. The first parish priest Gustave Meistre cleverly organized a lottery. This lottery authorized by Napoleon III helped raise much-needed funds. The city stepped in later. They purchased the land and existing structures to complete the building. Decorations and the spires on the two facade towers were left unfinished initially.

The church was finally inaugurated on October 1 1864. Its breathtaking interior features three naves with a ribbed vault. Ten lateral chapels flank the central aisle. Two more chapels grace the choir area. The impressive dimensions are 60 meters long and 30 meters wide. The facade crafted from Beaucaire stone stands tall at 33 meters.

The stained-glass windows are a remarkable feat. Created between 1862 and 1864 by Émile Thibaud. They are a true testament to his artistry. The choir’s stunning stained glass rises 18 meters. It depicts five scenes from the life of Christ. These are the multiplication of loaves the healing of the paralytic the blessing of children the Eucharist and the handing of the keys to Saint Peter. Above the grand organ another window showcases Saint Michael surrounded by angels.

The bells were cast by the Marseille Baudouin foundry. This foundry later shifted its focus to engine production in 1918. André Masson created the church’s metal Stations of the Cross. The church also boasts two organs a grand organ on the gallery and a choir organ.

In 2017 the Église Saint-Michel underwent a complete renovation. It retains its grandeur. It continues to stand as a symbol of faith and architectural excellence. It silently tells stories of faith dedication and community effort that spanned over a century. Today you can feel the history. You are now standing in a piece of Marseille’s rich heritage.
