The Thinker was once intended to be part of a grand work called The Gates of Hell. Rodin, the sculptor responsible for this monument, was commissioned to create a monumental entrance to a planned museum of decorative arts in Paris. Inspired by Dante’s Inferno – the poet’s journey through Hell – Rodin envisioned a swirling vortex of figures, a chaotic portrayal of human suffering and the eternal torment of sin.

Standing tall and dominating the entry, The Thinker was to be a symbolic representation of Dante, the poet himself, observing the scenes of Hell below. But fate had other plans. The museum wasn’t built, and The Thinker, originally named The Poet, became an independent work. He was enlarged, his muscled form even more compelling in his isolation.

In 1906, The Thinker was gifted to the city of Paris and placed in front of the Pantheon, a monument to great thinkers.
