Picture this a majestic building standing tall before you. This is Frederiksberg Town Hall a testament to history and civic pride. It wasn’t always this grand. In its early days Frederiksberg was a small rural community. The municipal council met in a humble room at the back of a poorhouse. Can you imagine? Later they moved to a poorhouse and hospital on Lampevej. Even that proved too small.
The growing population necessitated larger quarters. The council then rented space in a school. As Frederiksberg boomed the school became inadequate. A new building was erected. This housed not only the fire department but also a courthouse and town hall. But even this impressive structure couldn’t keep up with the ever expanding needs of Frederiksberg.
By the early 20th century the old town hall was bursting at the seams. Departments like the Treasury and City Planning were scattered across town. The Welfare and Hospital Service eventually moved to a new hospital on Nordre Fasanvej. Several proposals for a new town hall were made and rejected. Finally an architectural competition was held. Henning Hansen’s design was chosen. A five-story complex was planned.
However this ambitious project was stalled. World War II intervened causing material shortages. Construction started in 1942 but was halted from 1944 until 1949. Sadly Henning Hansen passed away in 1945. Carl H Nimb and Helge Holm took over completing the grand building. The Frederiksberg Town Hall was inaugurated on May 9 1953. The town hall is impressive. It’s 60 meters wide and 120 meters long. Its tower rises 70 meters high.
Inside this magnificent structure is more than just offices. There’s a grand ceremonial hall. There is also a wedding room and an assembly hall for the city council. The municipal archives rest quietly in the basement. A unique feature is the paternoster elevator. These continuous lifts are rarely seen now. The one in Frederiksberg Town Hall is reserved for staff. A new plaza was created to celebrate the town hall’s inauguration. A charming fountain features two young people sitting back to back. Frederiksberg Town Hall stands as a symbol of this city’s growth and perseverance. It is a place where history and modernity meet. A place of civic pride a place for weddings and council meetings. A testament to the spirit of Frederiksberg.
