This weathered plaque speaks volumes doesn’t it? It’s a portal to the rich history of the Cliff Temple Baptist Church right here in Dallas. This isn’t just any church. This is a place that’s been a cornerstone of Oak Cliff since 1898. Imagine twenty-six members leaving the First Baptist Church of Oak Cliff to establish their own congregation. They wanted to remain with the Baptist General Convention of Texas. That bold step led to the creation of what we know today as the Cliff Temple Baptist Church.

The plaque itself tells a story of growth and change. It recalls the early days under Pastor Joe W English. He guided the construction of their first chapel. Then he later helped build a second one after returning as pastor. The congregation even changed its name to Memorial Baptist Church during that time. But the story doesn’t end there.

In 1912 there was a significant union. Members of both First Baptist Church of Oak Cliff and Memorial Baptist Church joined forces. They formed a new congregation called Central Baptist Church of Oak Cliff. Dr W A Hewitt led this unified church until 1918. Then the remarkable Dr Wallace Bassett took the helm. He served for 48 years. He guided the church to adopt its current name Cliff Temple Baptist Church. Under his leadership the church flourished growing to a congregation of 5000 members. Dr Bassett also played a significant role in several denominational leadership positions. He contributed to Baylor University the Southern Baptist Annuity Board and the Baptist General Convention of Texas.

The Cliff Temple Baptist Church plaque stands as a testament to the enduring faith and resilience of its members. It reflects a long and impactful history. The plaque commemorates the church’s contributions to the community. The Cliff Temple Baptist Church continues to serve Oak Cliff.
