How many people does it take to run a country? France depends on the Institut National de la Statistique et des Études Économiques. It is also known as INSEE. We stand before its Parisian establishment. This agency collects and analyzes vital data. It informs decisions that shape the nation.

The Institut National de la Statistique et des Études Économiques is the heart of French statistics. Since 1946 INSEE has gathered information. It studies the French economy and its people. INSEE replaced the Vichy regime’s National Statistics Service. It has become a pillar of French governance.

INSEE is headquartered in Montrouge. This Parisian suburb is home to this crucial institution. From here INSEE coordinates data collection. It analyzes trends and publishes key findings. As the French branch of Eurostat INSEE plays a key role. It helps compile statistics for the entire European Union.

What exactly does the Institut National de la Statistique et des Études Économiques do? INSEE organizes the national census. It produces indices to track inflation. These figures influence rent rates and construction costs. INSEE also represents France. It participates in international discussions about statistics.

INSEE’s work is guided by the French Ministry of Finance. Jean-Luc Tavernier is the current director. Eurostat views INSEE as independent. This independence is vital for objective data analysis.

Research and teaching are key components of INSEE’s mission. The Group of the National Schools of the Economy and Statistics supports this. ENSAE trains future INSEE administrators. ENSAI produces engineers specialized in data analysis.

INSEE uses numerical codes to track various entities. INSEE codes identify administrative units. They do not coincide with postcodes. INSEE numbers are national identification numbers for people. SIREN codes identify businesses and nonprofit groups. SIRET codes apply to their facilities.

Statistics collection in France predates INSEE. Adolphe Thiers created the Statistics Bureau in 1833. It was later named the General Statistics of France.

Lucien March expanded the scope of the SGF. Alfred Sauvy introduced competitive exams. René Carmille created the modern statistical organization.

Carmille created the Demographic Service in 1940. This concealed activities banned by the Nazis. The Demographic Service absorbed the SGF. It became the National Statistics Service. Carmille also established a school to train SNS members.

Carmille worked for Vichy France. But he was a double agent. He sabotaged the Nazi census. This saved Jewish people from death camps. He helped mobilize French resistance. The Nazis caught him. He died in Dachau in 1945.

In 1946 the SNS became INSEE. It was created by law on April 27 1946. It became the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Surveys.

IRIS is a system used for taking a census. INSEE developed it. It divides the country into units of equal size. IRIS ensures accurate data collection. It is the fundamental unit for disseminating infra-municipal data.

Many talented individuals have directed INSEE. Francis-Louis Closon led the institute from 1946 to 1961. Claude Gruson followed. Jean Ripert then Edmond Malinvaud Jean-Claude Milleron Paul Champsaur Jean-Michel Charpin Jean-Philippe Cotis and currently Jean-Luc Tavernier. Each director has shaped INSEE’s evolution. They helped to adapt to changing needs.

The Institut National de la Statistique et des Études Économiques continues to evolve. It embraces technological innovation. It strengthens statistical governance. It ensures the quality and accessibility of data. INSEE remains a vital asset for France. It helps France to navigate an ever-changing world.
