Big King Reserve is a significant place. It’s a Maunga an ancestral mountain. It holds layers of Maori history. Each tribe has its own stories connected to this land. The name Te Tātūa-a-Riukiuta honors Riukiuta a respected tohunga. He unified local tribes.

Imagine this place 28500 years ago. A massive eruption created Auckland’s largest crater. It was 800 meters wide and nearly 200 meters deep. That crater is gone now. Two of the three volcanic cones that once stood here were quarried away. Only Big King remains a testament to the power of nature and the impact of development.

Look around you. You can still see evidence of Maori history. Kūmara pits underground storage for kūmara are here. Terracing also marks the land. These features show how people lived and worked here for generations.

Big King was once the site of a pā a fortified village. The reserve’s flat areas and steep terrain still offer great views. It’s also very popular with dog owners. There’s an off-leash area. Remember to clean up after your furry friends.

The views from the top are stunning. You can see the whole city spread out below. It’s a 133-meter climb. The effort is worth it. From this height you can appreciate the reserve’s significance. You’re standing where history unfolds. You’re experiencing a connection to the past.
