What if I told you that right here in Fukuoka lies an urban oasis? It’s a place where you can escape the city’s hustle. I’m talking about the Fukuoka City Botanical Gardens.

The Fukuoka City Botanical Gardens is more than just pretty flowers. It’s a testament to Fukuoka’s resilience. The gardens were established in 1953. But their story began earlier.

Originally, the gardens opened near East Park in 1933. This was to celebrate Emperor Hirohito’s coronation. However, World War II took its toll. The zoo closed in 1944. Large animals were euthanized. Yet, hope wasn’t lost.

In 1949, the city decided to create a new zoo in South Park. The Fukuoka City Zoological Society raised money. Finally, the Fukuoka City Botanical Gardens reopened in its current location. That was August 22, 1953. It started with 143 animals and 69 species. There was even a miniature train.

Over the years, the Fukuoka City Botanical Gardens expanded. By 2003, it had welcomed over 40 million visitors. It housed 706 animals from 168 species. The Fukuoka City Botanical Gardens is home to about 1,300 types of outdoor plants.

The rose garden is a highlight. It features 1,300 roses of about 280 varieties. Visit in spring or autumn for the best views. Spring offers an array of large flowers. Autumn brings richer colors.

Don’t miss the greenhouse. It holds over 1,200 plant species. See orchids, ferns, and cacti. The greenhouse is divided into eight rooms. There are also two gardens. Each section displays different plants. Follow the recommended path. It takes you upstairs for a unique view.

The Fukuoka City Botanical Gardens also has a herb garden. A water garden adds to the charm. The flower garden spans 500 square meters. It might inspire your own gardening.

For a panoramic view, head to the observation deck. You can see Tenjin and Hakata Station. There’s even a cafe with a playground. It’s called the Observatory Kids Terrace.

The central lawn is perfect for relaxing. The 4,900-square meter space surrounds a pond. It’s ideal for a picnic. Enjoy seasonal plants year-round. See cherry blossoms in spring. Lily-of-the-valley flowers bloom in early summer. Oak trees bear acorns in autumn.

The Fukuoka City Botanical Gardens isn’t just a garden. It’s an experience. It’s a place to connect with nature. It’s a reminder of Fukuoka’s history and beauty. So, take a deep breath and enjoy the Fukuoka City Botanical Gardens.
