“Lost in Meudon?” That is something you will never be after this tour. Today’s stop is Rue Éliane. This street in Meudon bears the name of a remarkable woman. She was known as Éliane Petit de La Villéon. But most people called her Éliane de La Villéon.

Éliane de La Villéon was a French artist. She excelled as a painter. She also worked as a printmaker and sculptor. Born in Bordeaux, she spent her childhood in Brittany. Her family had deep roots there. Brittany’s landscapes and seascapes would later inspire her art.

Her family had artistic leanings. Her paternal grandfather was an amateur painter. So too was her father Emmanuel Petit de La Villéon. He was a surgeon. He pioneered projectile extraction techniques from the lung. Éliane followed her artistic passion.

Éliane studied at the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs. She later established studios in Paris. Her paintings featured landscapes. These scenes captured the essence of towns. She painted cities in Brittany, Paris, Bruges and Venice. She also portrayed London, Amsterdam and North Africa.

Éliane de La Villéon became president of the Salon de l’Union des Femmes Peintres et Sculpteurs. This demonstrated her commitment to professionalism. She wanted rigor in artistic choices. In 1964, she emphasized the importance of high standards. She said the salon should not be amateurish.

Éliane died in 1969. She was laid to rest in the Barbou family tomb. This is in the Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris. Evan de Lapeyrière sculpted her bronze bust. Yves Brayer painted her portrait. These tributes honored her artistic legacy.

Her work received critical acclaim. One critic described her landscapes of Provence. They praised her views of Paris. Also her still lifes were admired. The critic noted nothing was left to chance. Her art was constructed on classic themes. She excelled in spontaneous watercolors. She captured the atmosphere of marine horizons. She also showed the struggles of aquatic life.

Gérald Schurr described her paintings. He said her work evoked a sense of peacefulness. She served as president of the Union des Femmes Peintres et Sculpteurs.

Éliane’s works are part of public collections. You can find them at the Assemblée Nationale. She has works at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France. There are pieces at the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris. Her art is in the Fonds National d’Art Contemporain. Her work is also featured at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Rennes.
