Gazing up at the Haydarpaşa Protokol Camii, one might wonder about the stories it holds. This mosque stands near the bustling Haydarpaşa Train Station in Istanbul. It’s a place where history and faith intertwine. The current Haydarpaşa Protokol Camii isn’t the first sacred space to grace this spot. A mescid, built by Buharlı Haydar Dede, a Naqshbandi sheikh, once stood here. Sadly, it was demolished in 1873 during the construction of the railway. Its naaşı (remains) lie by the tracks near Haydarpaşa Bridge. The name “Haydarpaşa Protokol Camii” often leads to confusion. People associate it with Haydar Pasha, the Ottoman vezir who owned this land. However, Haydar Pasha had no direct connection to the mosque or its predecessor. He’s remembered for transforming this area into a magnificent imperial garden, later claiming it as his own. The current Haydarpaşa Protokol Camii’s story begins much later. In the late 20th century, Tahsin Çelikoğlu and Önder Özdeyen, officials from the State Railways (TCDD), proposed rebuilding a mosque on this site. Their efforts, supported by a local association, led to the laying of the foundation stone on April 4, 1991. The mosque finally opened its doors to worshippers on November 13, 1998. Its architecture blends Baroque and Ottoman styles. This stands as a testament to the dedication of those who brought this place of worship back to life, continuing the legacy of faith that began with Haydar Dede’s humble mescid. The Haydarpaşa Protokol Camii stands not only as a place of prayer but as a symbol of resilience. It has endured through demolition and reconstruction. It reminds us that faith can find a way, even amidst the transformations of a bustling city.
