Seventy-two meters high. That’s the Stadthaus in Bonn. A towering presence on Berliner Platz. Its construction wasn’t without controversy. The Stadthaus was built between 1973 and 1977. Its creation required the demolition of several streets in Bonn’s historic Nordstadt. This sparked protests from residents. They cherished their Gründerzeit architecture. The Stadthaus stands as a testament to the era’s urban planning ideals. It was conceived as a symbol of a “traffic-friendly city”. The result is a unique structure. Five towers of varying heights rise from a base that serves as a parking garage.

The Stadthaus is more than just a building. It’s the seat of Bonn’s city administration. Around 1500 employees work within its walls. It houses the city council chambers. Since 1978 the Stadthaus has been the central hub for municipal activities. Its design though is not without critics. Many find its lack of a ground-level main entrance problematic. The primary access points are elevated ramps and staircases leading to the “plus one” level.

The Stadthaus is a modern masterpiece. Its light-metal facade with sun-protection glazing is visually striking. It changes its appearance constantly depending on the weather and time of day. Initially the facade featured protruding glass panels. These created a unique relief-like texture. They were removed in 2013-2014 due to material fatigue. Safety concerns necessitated their removal.

But the Stadthaus is also home to several works of art. Nicolas Schöffer’s Chronos 15 stands on the east platform. This 20-meter-tall kinetic sculpture features moving metal mirrors. Originally motors and lights added to the visual spectacle. These proved problematic however and were removed. Günter Ferdinand Ris’s Lichtwald water sculpture graces the southern access ramp. Its white stelae create a light forest at night. The Stadthaus courtyard houses Spiegelfaltung a stainless steel design object by Rolf Müller. This piece reflects and refracts light throughout the building.

The Stadthaus has faced challenges. It requires extensive renovations. The city council approved plans for a complete renovation in 2012. The estimated cost is 120 million euros. Recent assessments revealed damage to up to 300 concrete supports in the basement. These issues highlight the complexities of maintaining large-scale structures from the 1970s. Despite the debates and challenges the Stadthaus remains a significant landmark in Bonn. It’s a visual reminder of Bonn’s growth and ambition in the late 20th century. The Stadthaus. A building that continues to shape Bonn’s story.
