NIT Rio applies federal legislation relevant to innovation. It also follows the normative acts of MCTI. These efforts align with the Research Units within the arrangement. NIT Rio has specific responsibilities as defined by law.

The Instituto Nacional de Tecnologia INT is also located in Rio de Janeiro. It is committed to innovation. INT is linked to the Ministry of Science Technology and Innovations MCTI. It operates in technological research. INT generates solutions for problems impacting the productive sector. It focuses on enhancing company competitiveness. In 2006 the INT formalized its Technological Innovation Center NIT. Since then the NIT has led Innovation Management and Intellectual Property activities. It aims to establish adequate protection for intellectual creations. These creations are generated within the Institution. The goal is to transfer these to the productive sector. They should also benefit society contributing to technological and social development. Since 2011 the Institute has acted as an Embrapii Unit. It supports companies in developing innovative products and processes. This focuses on Industrial Chemical Technology.

The INT’s laboratory infrastructure is extensive. It includes 20 laboratories. There is also a Nanotechnology Characterization Center for Materials and Catalysis CENANO. In 2013 CENANO was selected to participate in the MCTI’s SISNANO network. This solidified the INT’s work in nanotechnology. This modern infrastructure allows for high-level R&D projects. These projects have significant scientific and technological content. The INT serves various key sectors. These include Oil Gas Energy Health Chemical and Petrochemical. It also serves the Automotive sector. The INT is a technical expert body. It validates the useful life of fixed assets. It also evaluates intermediate products and production process losses.
