Step into the heart of Leipzig’s vibrant west. Before you stands the Alte Handelsschule. Its walls whisper tales of education and transformation. For over a century this impressive building served as a school. First it was a Volksschule a primary school educating generations of Leipzig children. Imagine the hurried footsteps of pupils rushing to class. Picture the chalk dust swirling in the air. The school expanded rapidly. In 1894 a new wing was added. The growth reflected Kleinzschocher’s booming population spurred by nearby factories.

The Alte Handelsschule evolved further. In the mid-20th century it became a vocational school. Here young people learned the skills of commerce. Future office workers and tradespeople honed their talents within these walls. This was a time of significant change for the school. In 1950 the Handelsschule moved into the existing building. Two separate schools Kaufmännische Berufsschule I and II merged. The combined institution trained a wide spectrum of professionals. From industrial clerks to stenographers everyone found their path.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall the school’s role shifted again. The school moved to a new location in 1999. The buildings stood empty. Decay threatened. But then a visionary emerged. Falk Röhner saw potential where others saw ruin. He secured the site in 2009. The planned demolition was halted. A remarkable transformation began.

Today the Alte Handelsschule thrives as a vibrant art quarter. Over 100 artists and craftspeople have studios here. It is a hub of creativity. A place where art exhibitions flourish. Reforming pedagogies thrive. The design school LSOD found a home within the historic walls. The Alte Handelsschule continues to evolve. It now fosters international artistic and cultural exchange. A new chapter of Leipzig’s history unfolds within these walls. The former school is now a center for artistic innovation and education. The Alte Handelsschule’s story is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the power of vision. It stands as a reminder that even buildings left to decay can find new life purpose. It’s a powerful symbol of renewal and adaptation. A true reflection of Leipzig’s ever changing character.
