Once upon a time on Rue des Moulins a bustling Parisian street stood a small hill. This hill was the Butte des Moulins. It was a significant landmark in the 17th century. The Rue des Moulins itself owes its name to the mills that once stood on this very spot.

Imagine the scene. The air thick with the scent of freshly baked bread and grinding flour. Windmills turning lazily in the breeze their sails catching the light. This was long before the grand avenues and elegant buildings we see today. The Butte des Moulins was not just a hill. It was a repository for rubble and waste. The debris leftover from the construction of Charles V’s city walls under Francis I.

This area underwent a dramatic transformation. Michel Villedo a mason from Creuse purchased land in the 1st arrondissement. He levelled the Butte des Moulins around 1667. The work was vast. The remnants of the hill remain. You can still see a small slope on Rue Thérèse a gentle incline that whispers of the past.

Villedo’s ambitious project reshaped the landscape. He created new streets including the current Rue des Moulins. Many buildings boast charming arcaded ground floors a testament to the era’s architectural style. The street initially bore different names. “Rue Neuve de Richelieu” and “Rue Royale Saint-Roch” reflect its changing fortunes and the powerful patrons who influenced its development.

Rue des Moulins has witnessed history unfold. Famous figures such as Émile Boutmy who spent his childhood on the street have left their mark. Number 6 once housed “La Fleur blanche” a brothel frequented by the renowned artist Toulouse-Lautrec. At number 8 stood the Hôtel d’Holbach a significant residence and later a Swiss refugee centre.

Number 25 housed the Desenne printworks. This is where the radical newspaper Le Vieux Cordelier was published during the French Revolution. This is a place where words ignited change. The Rue des Moulins is more than just a street. It’s a living testament to Paris’s rich history. It’s a place where the past lingers subtly woven into the fabric of the present. Its very stones whisper tales of windmills rubble revolutions and the enduring spirit of Parisian life. As you walk along Rue des Moulins take a moment to absorb the echoes of the centuries. The legacy of this remarkable street lives on in every building and every cobblestone.
