Across the shimmering waters of the Sea of Marmara stands Kadıköy a district brimming with history. But beneath the modern bustle lies the ancient heart of Chalcedon.

Chalcedon a Megarian colony founded in 685 BC boasts a rich past. Its strategic location almost directly opposite Byzantium made it a vital trading hub. It flourished for centuries. Yet it was deemed by some as the “City of the Blind” for choosing a location considered inferior to that of its neighbor across the Bosphorus. The irony is that Chalcedon thrived despite this perceived oversight.

The Persian general Megabazus famously remarked on the seemingly poor judgment of Chalcedon’s founders. He questioned their choice. The stunning views of Byzantium’s potential location must have been overlooked. This comment however only adds to the intrigue surrounding Chalcedon’s enduring success.

Chalcedon shared Byzantium’s fortunes. It experienced both periods of prosperity and hardship. It fell under Persian rule and later Roman control. It even suffered destruction at the hands of Mithridates. Thousands of Romans perished during his attack. Yet the city persevered.

The Roman Empire granted Chalcedon the status of a free city. It endured barbarian raids. Its proximity to Constantinople however led to its slow decline. The Byzantines and later the Ottomans used its stones. They repurposed them for Constantinople’s grand monuments.

Chalcedon holds immense religious significance. In 451 AD it hosted the Council of Chalcedon a pivotal moment in Christian history. This council defined the dual nature of Jesus. The theological outcome of the Council impacted the course of Christianity. It also led to a lasting schism with the Oriental Orthodox Churches.

Today little remains of Chalcedon’s ancient structures above ground. Artifacts uncovered during excavations though tell its story. They showcase its vibrant past. These are on display at the Istanbul Archaeological Museum. Standing here you are standing on the legacy of a city. Its history stretches back millennia. A city that played a crucial role in shaping both the political and spiritual landscapes of the region.
