A whisper of history echoes from the stones of the Hotel de Roquelaure. Right here on the Boulevard Saint-Germain stands a building steeped in Parisian grandeur. This isn’t just any street. It’s the location of the Hotel de Roquelaure a place where centuries of stories unfold.

Initially built as the Hotel de Villetaneuse it transformed in the early 1700s. Marshal Antoine Gaston de Roquelaure acquired it. He then expanded it considerably. Architects Pierre Cailleteau and Jean-Baptiste Leroux masterminded its impressive design. The hotel’s elegant facades and courtyards reflect their skill. The meticulous detailing inside the hotel speaks volumes about the era’s opulence. The hotel also stands as a testament to the evolving landscape of the Faubourg Saint-Germain.

After Roquelaure’s death the hotel changed hands. Mathieu-François Molé a prominent magistrate purchased it. He added the central staircase a key feature of the building’s current design. The Hotel Molé as it became known hosted lavish gatherings. Its significance shifted from aristocratic to political. The Molé family’s fortunes changed drastically during the French Revolution. Their son Edouard-François was even guillotined. The hotel’s status as a national asset during this tumultuous period saw its interiors altered.

In 1808 Jean-Jacques-Régis de Cambacérès Arch-Chancellor of the Empire acquired the hotel. He poured enormous sums into its restoration. The extensive renovations show his wealth and ambition. Cambacérès hosted opulent receptions that were legendary for their exquisite food. He also connected it to the adjacent Hotel de Lesguidières-Sully further expanding its scale. Cambacérès lived there in extravagant style until his exile in 1816. The hotel’s identity changed once more after he left.

The hotel was sold to the Duchess of Orléans. She then exchanged it with the government. It then housed various government departments. The Hotel de Roquelaure became home to the Council of State. Later it became the Ministry of Public Works. This continued a pattern of the hotel being at the heart of power.

The construction of the Boulevard Saint-Germain under Haussmann narrowly spared the Hotel de Roquelaure from demolition. The building is a survivor of the many changes to the Parisian streetscape. It’s a monument to its rich history. The building’s architecture even today stands as a captivating blend of different periods and styles. Explore the Hotel de Roquelaure.
