Picture the rolling hills of Mill Park. Imagine a time long before houses and roads. This land belonged to Henry “Money” Miller a man who bred racehorses. His property stretched far. It reached from Darebin Creek to the Plenty River. Sixty-five people lived and worked there. They tended to Miller’s horses and his farm.

Mill Park’s story is deeply intertwined with its namesake. Henry Miller was a prominent figure. His influence shaped the area’s character for generations. His home Findon was known far and wide. The Findon Harriers Hunt Club met regularly at Mill Park. They rode through the fields. They followed the hounds across the land.

The rural landscape remained largely untouched until the 1960s. A quarry opened in 1964 changing the terrain. This quarry supplied materials for many of Melbourne’s early skyscrapers. Boral Australia took over the quarry in the 1960s. It closed in the 1970s due to groundwater seepage. That seepage created the lake many locals call Blue Lake.

The 1970s saw the beginning of residential development. Subdivisions transformed the land. A shopping complex a kindergarten and a preschool were built. The Stables Shopping Centre commemorates Miller’s Redleap racing stables. Redleap Avenue also honors this legacy. The Plough Hotel remembers the Plough Inn a village center in the 1850s.

Mill Park Drive follows the shape of an old horse racing track. Many streets are named after famous racehorses. Names like Phar Lap Carbine and Redleap echo Mill Park’s equestrian heritage. This area saw rapid residential development throughout the 1980s. Schools and recreational facilities were built. The Mill Park Post Office opened in 1983. The area’s transformation continues. The Mill Park Leisure Centre recently underwent a major renovation reopening in 2021.

The story of Mill Park is one of transformation. From a rural estate to a thriving suburb it tells of how one man’s vision shaped the land. It is a story of history development and community. The legacy of Henry “Money” Miller remains. It lives in the names of streets parks and businesses. The next time you walk through Mill Park remember the rich past hidden beneath the modern landscape. The land whispers stories of horses of hunts and of the man who gave Mill Park its name.
