“A preserving jar a time capsule unearthed during demolition” That’s how the story of New Lynn School begins. Right here before you stands New Lynn School a cornerstone of the community since 1888. Its story is one of perseverance growth and even a surprising connection to a British warship.

Initially New Lynn children had to travel far to Avondale or Henderson Hill schools. Walter McCaul a local farmer along with 17 other settlers petitioned for their own school. Their persistence paid off. In 1888 New Lynn School opened its doors. It was a humble two-room building costing just £185. The first headmaster Thomas Chapman received a yearly salary of £80.

The school’s location was initially on Great North Road near where Kelston Girls’ High School now stands. As New Lynn grew so did the school. Overcrowding led to a move in 1914 to its present location on Hutchinson and Margan Avenues. The old schoolhouse wasn’t wasted. It was moved to Glenview Road becoming the first school in Glen Eden. The 1914 opening marked a significant milestone. The new school boasted four teachers and 164 pupils. Headmaster Howard Ellis even issued a peace proclamation in 1918.

The school bell is a unique piece of New Lynn School history. In 1948 Headmaster Fred Breach sought a replacement bell. His request led to a unique acquisition the bell of HMS Mameluke a British minesweeper. The bell which had swept German mines after World War II found a new home in New Lynn. It’s a lasting reminder of a school’s unexpected connections.

Then came 1975 demolition of an old brick schoolroom. During the demolition workers discovered a time capsule. A preserving jar containing a copy of the first New Zealand Herald newspaper. The jar was cemented into the foundation stone back in 1914. It’s a testament to the school’s rich past.

New Lynn School today is very different. No more horses to school. No more mops and brooms just vacuum cleaners. The school continues to thrive a testament to the community’s enduring commitment to education. The school motto “Whaia Te Iti Kahurangi” Reaching for the Sky reflects the aspirations of the school and its students. From a humble beginning to a vibrant present New Lynn School’s legacy lives on.
