Tucked away on the Corniche Kennedy, Villa Gabrielle stands as a silent witness to Marseille’s ever-evolving story. Villa Gabrielle isn’t just a beautiful building. It holds within its walls a fascinating history, intertwined with the lives of children and the dedicated individuals who cared for them. It’s difficult to uncover much about the Servel family, the original owners. One document hints they might have been ship owners. The history of the building itself remains shrouded in mystery. But what we do know is that around 1946, Villa Gabrielle became part of an educational experiment. The French Secretariat of State for Youth, in collaboration with the Marseille City Hall, opened a boarding school and learning center within its walls. For over two decades, Villa Gabrielle provided a home for children under the care of social services. The city of Marseille managed the villa until December 3, 1999. Then, on January 1, 2000, La Caravelle Association took over. Elisabeth Joannon, the founder of La Caravelle, witnessed the struggles of families facing temporary hardship. She envisioned a place where these families could find support and rebuild their lives. This vision led to the birth of La Caravelle in Marseille in 1979. A pivotal moment came on December 1, 1980. The Prefect of Bouches-du-Rhône granted permission to open a Social Reintegration and Accommodation Center (CHRS). Joannon presided over the association until her passing in late 2005. In 2000, La Caravelle expanded its mission by assuming management of Villa Gabrielle. It became a Social Children’s Home (MECS Charles et Gabrielle SERVEL). Later, in 2004, they opened a Reception Center for Asylum Seekers (CADA), formalizing a service they had previously provided through specific accommodation. La Caravelle continued to grow, adding services for families in difficulty and those facing eviction. They even created an emergency reception center for asylum seekers, responding to a need identified by state services. Today, Villa Gabrielle stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of compassion and the power of community. It’s a reminder that even amidst a bustling city, quiet acts of care can create a profound impact.
