The scent of incense hangs heavy in the air. Before you stands the Parroquia Mater Admirabilis a testament to faith and community.

This isn’t just any church. The Parroquia Mater Admirabilis in Montevideo’s Jardines del Hipódromo neighborhood is a vibrant heart of the community. It’s a place where generations of immigrants and Uruguayans have shared their faith. Think of the countless prayers whispered within its walls. Think of the countless baptisms weddings and funerals.

The church’s history intertwines with the neighborhood’s story. It has stood witness to the joys and sorrows of families like the Rodriguez-Gonzalez family. They arrived from Spain in 1952 settling directly across from the church. Blanca Rodriguez a well-known television journalist shares memories of childhood masses. She and her sister Estrella were baptized here. Their father Mariano a devout Catholic even helped repair the church’s roof. They recall the lively atmosphere. The large area behind the church hosted games like “El prisionero” and theatrical performances.

The Parroquia Mater Admirabilis has been led by many dedicated individuals. Father Ernesto Testa was the first parish priest. He was followed by Father Ramón Andión who served for thirty years. His tenure saw significant expansion including the construction of a school now privately run. Sister Leda Delgado and Sister Florencia members of the Missionary Crusaders of the Church reside here. They arrived in 2020 shortly before the pandemic. They strive to support the community despite facing challenges like poverty and violence. Father Mauro Fernández the current administrator continues this commitment. He works alongside the sisters and lay people like Mariana who runs a Saturday soup kitchen.

The church’s main altar houses a stunning painting. A replica of a painting from a monastery in Rome it depicts the Virgin Mary Mater Admirabilis. Estrella Rodriguez explains that it was painted in 1884 by a postulant of the Sacred Heart Sisters. Originally titled the Virgin of the Lily its vibrant colors eventually softened. Pope Pius IX declared it Mater Admirabilis “Mother Most Admirable”.

The Parroquia Mater Admirabilis continues to serve as a beacon of hope. Its story is one of resilience faith and community. It is more than a place of worship.
