The Parroquia Mater Admirabilis has been led by many dedicated individuals. Father Ernesto Testa was the first parish priest. He was followed by Father Ramón Andión who served for thirty years. His tenure saw significant expansion including the construction of a school now privately run. Sister Leda Delgado and Sister Florencia members of the Missionary Crusaders of the Church reside here. They arrived in 2020 shortly before the pandemic. They strive to support the community despite facing challenges like poverty and violence. Father Mauro Fernández the current administrator continues this commitment. He works alongside the sisters and lay people like Mariana who runs a Saturday soup kitchen.
The church’s main altar houses a stunning painting. A replica of a painting from a monastery in Rome it depicts the Virgin Mary Mater Admirabilis. Estrella Rodriguez explains that it was painted in 1884 by a postulant of the Sacred Heart Sisters. Originally titled the Virgin of the Lily its vibrant colors eventually softened. Pope Pius IX declared it Mater Admirabilis “Mother Most Admirable”.
