A chemist’s legacy. That’s what this plaque represents. Look closely. It’s dedicated to Dr Alphonse Normandy. This unassuming blue plaque marks the London residence of a remarkable man. A pioneer in his field.

Dr Alphonse Rene Le Mire de Normandy was not just any chemist. He was born in Rouen France. He initially trained in medicine. However his true passion was chemistry. He moved to England around 1840. He initially resided in Dalston before settling in Judd Street. This very street. Number 91 to be precise. He lived and worked here from 1850 to 1859.

Dr Normandy’s innovations were groundbreaking. He developed patents for indelible inks and for a process to harden soft soaps. But his most significant contribution? His revolutionary seawater desalination apparatus. Patented in 1851. This was a time when access to clean drinking water was a major problem at sea. Dr Normandy’s invention was ingenious. It distilled seawater at low temperatures. This process infused the resulting water with atmospheric air. This made the water palatable. It was a huge success. His invention is still relevant today. Desalination is now a multi-billion dollar industry. This is all thanks to Dr Normandy’s pioneering work.

The plaque also highlights his expertise as an analytical chemist. He provided crucial evidence before a House of Commons committee investigating food adulteration. Specifically the use of alum in bread. His testimony was reportedly quite startling. He was a fellow of the Chemical Society elected in 1854. A true testament to his respected position in the scientific community.

Sadly Dr Normandy passed away on May 10 1864. He died at Odin Lodge Clapham Park. His contribution to science though continues to shape the world. This simple plaque ensures we remember his legacy. We remember Dr Alphonse Normandy the chemist inventor and visionary.
