“Lost your picnic basket again, Fred?” Picnic Shelter 1 at Magnuson Park buzzed with activity. The Seattle Weavers Guild’s annual summer picnic was in full swing. Picnic Shelter 1, usually a quiet spot by the lake shore near the Magnuson Boat Launch, was transformed into a vibrant hub. The air was thick with the scent of potluck dishes. This wasn’t just any picnic. This was a celebration of weaving, Hawaiian style. The guild members, gathered under the shelter, were learning the art of lei making. Two styles were being taught: lei hilo, a twisting and braiding technique using tī leaves, and lei wili, where flowers and foliage are wound onto a base. Picnic Shelter 1 echoed with laughter as fingers fumbled with leaves and flowers. The instructors, known as Nā ʻAnakē (The Aunties), students of the renowned Aunty Manuiki Lono, shared their knowledge and passion for Hawaiian culture. While the shelter offered respite from the July sun, it lacked one crucial element: water. Attendees had been warned to bring their own, a small price to pay for a day of weaving, sharing, and celebrating at Picnic Shelter 1.
