In 1936, the air crackled with a different kind of energy at Domagkpark. Not the joyous buzz of a neighborhood, but the terse commands of the Nazi Luftwaffe. They were building their Funkkaserne, a military communications barracks, a stark contrast to the vibrant community that thrives here today. After the war’s end, Domagkpark echoed with the hushed hopes of displaced persons, mostly from Eastern Europe. The former barracks, now under US administration, became a transition point, a waystation on their journey back home, facilitated by the UNRRA. In 1956, the German Bundeswehr took over, the sounds of military drills replacing the quiet anxieties of the displaced. Domagkpark, still known as the Funkkaserne then, housed pioneer battalions and a tank company until 1992. But a transformation was brewing. In 1993, the first artists arrived, breathing life and color back into the austere military buildings. Domagkpark blossomed into a haven for creativity, the Domagkateliers becoming one of Germany’s largest artist colonies, a vibrant hub of almost 300 studios. This artistic haven flourished until 2011, when the city of Munich, facing a housing shortage, decided to redevelop the land. The artists moved on, but their legacy remains, imprinted on the very soul of Domagkpark. Today, the vibrant spirit of the Domagkateliers lives on in the städtisches Atelierhaus, a testament to the area’s artistic past. Alongside the GEWOFAG apartments in Gertrud-Grunow-Strasse, it ensures a strong artistic presence remains. Domagkpark isn’t just a place to live; it’s a testament to community-driven planning. A unique consortium of housing cooperatives, building communities, and municipal housing companies came together to create a mixed-use space where everyone feels at home. The result is a dynamic neighborhood with over 1,600 homes, businesses, cafes, and social and cultural spaces. And remember the enormous Ferris wheel built by Maurer SE near Domagkpark? It graced Munich’s skyline before moving to the Werksviertel. From military barracks to artist colony to thriving neighborhood, Domagkpark stands as a symbol of change, resilience, and the power of community.
