Intrigued by faith, a group of Mennonites established a mission in Chicago on March 5, 1914. This mission marked the humble beginnings of what we know today as the First Mennonite Church. The First Mennonite Church initially served as a city rescue mission at 727 West 63rd Street. The mission board of the General Conference Mennonite Church appointed W. W. Miller as superintendent and Catherine Niswander as his assistant. As the mission’s impact grew, so did its need for a larger space. This led them to relocate to 7110 South Ashland Avenue on April 22, 1915. The church’s focus shifted to Sunday school teachings and regular church services. By 1917, the congregation had again outgrown its space, prompting another move to 7205 South Ashland. Continued growth led the mission board to construct the current brick building at 73rd and Lafflin in the summer of 1918. The First Mennonite Church has witnessed many changes over the years, including a period of division in 1934. Despite this challenge, the church persevered, standing as a testament to the enduring power of faith and community. The First Mennonite Church remains an active part of the Central District Conference of Mennonite Church USA, continuing its mission of service and worship in the heart of Chicago.
