Budapest’s relationship with water runs deep. It began long before the city even existed. Celtic tribes called the area Ak-ink meaning abundant water. Romans later harnessed thermal springs through aqueducts.
Fast forward to the 19th century. Budapest was rapidly growing. There was an urgent need for a reliable water supply. Outbreaks of typhoid and cholera underscored this need. The construction of a modern water system became a priority.
Two main approaches were considered. One was coastal filtration using the Danube’s gravel layers. The other was artificial filtration. William Lindley, an English engineer, advocated for the latter. Due to limited resources, he built a temporary waterworks. It used well water and was located near today’s Parliament.
The unification of Pest, Buda, and Óbuda in 1873 increased the population. The temporary waterworks proved inadequate. János Wein, the first director of the waterworks, championed natural filtration. He initiated exploratory drilling. This led to development opportunities in various areas including Újlak and Óbuda.
Wein’s plans led to the construction of the right bank waterworks in Budaújlak. The temporary waterworks had to be relocated. It was to make way for the Parliament building. After years of debate, construction of the final waterworks began in Káposztásmegyer. Mihály Kajlinger completed it.
Kajlinger was a mechanical engineer. He played a crucial role in Budapest’s water supply. He designed the mechanical equipment for the central sewage pumping station. He planned the Káposztásmegyer waterworks. Construction started in 1893 and lasted over a decade.
In 1904, the Káposztásmegyer waterworks began operating. It could supply 240,000 cubic meters of drinking water daily. The facility included wells, water-lifting installations, and a cast-iron main line. It was considered one of Europe’s most advanced waterworks at the time.
The early 20th century brought new challenges. A severe flood in 1923 damaged the twin canals of Káposztásmegyer. This significantly reduced Budapest’s water supply. Restoration work took ten months. Water supply was suspended at night until 1925.
Renovations in 1927 replaced steam engines with electric ones. World War II caused further damage. Restoration was completed by 1947. Continuous development and modernization followed. In 1999, a computerized plant management system was introduced.
Kajlinger also oversaw the construction of the Gellért Hill counterpressure pool. This further improved Budapest’s water supply. He advocated for water meters to reduce waste. Mass installation began in 1921.
