The story of the Igreja Metodista begins in 1835. Pastor Fountain Elliot Pitts arrived in Rio. He started holding services in private residences. The first permanent pastor was appointed in 1836. It was Reverend Justin Spaulding. Early services were held in a building in Largo da Glória.
Between 1841 and 1867, the Methodist mission faced challenges. Converting Brazilians proved difficult. Funding from the US was lacking. A yellow fever epidemic devastated Rio. The mission was suspended.
In 1870, the Methodist Episcopal Church South decided to resume preaching. Evangelization restarted in 1878. Pastor John J. Ranson settled in the imperial capital. He had studied Portuguese in Rio Grande do Sul, Uruguay, and São Paulo.
Reverend Ranson rented a house on Rua do Catete. He lived there and held his first services. More missionaries arrived. The church grew as more people joined. A larger space was needed for services.
In 1881, land was purchased where the Igreja Metodista now stands. A chapel was built first. It opened in September 1882. In 1886, the current temple was built. It features a neoclassical style with English Gothic elements.
A legal issue arose during the temple’s inauguration. A group of Catholics tried to block the construction. They cited a law from the Imperial Constitution. The law prohibited non-Catholic religions from using ecclesiastical elements. This included facades. Despite the challenge, the Igreja Metodista was inaugurated. It retains its architectural features today.
In 1978, the Igreja Metodista was declared a heritage site. The Instituto Estadual do Patrimônio Cultural do Rio de Janeiro recognized it. In 1994, the Episcopal College recognized it as the Catedral Metodista do Rio de Janeiro.
Today, the Igreja Metodista is the headquarters. It is the seat of the First Ecclesiastical Region of the Methodist Church of Brazil. This region covers the state of Rio de Janeiro. Many important events are held here. These include the nomination of bishops and pastors. Conventions and ministry meetings also take place here.
