Can a single piece of land hold a century of stories? At Paya Lebar Methodist Girls’ Secondary School (PLMGS), the answer is a resounding yes. This very ground has witnessed a remarkable transformation since 1916. Originally purchased by the Methodist Episcopal Building and Location Board, this plot on Boundary Road was meant to house a branch of the Anglo-Chinese School. In 1917, it opened as Paya Lebar English School, a simple elementary school with three staff and just 24 boys. Paya Lebar Methodist Girls’ Secondary School quickly evolved, welcoming girls the following year. The school’s journey wasn’t always smooth. During World War II, the school building was occupied by Japanese forces and suffered extensive damage. However, under the steadfast leadership of Mrs. Chew Hock Hin, starting in 1935, the school persevered. She reorganized PLMGS after the war, resuming classes in a new block despite limited resources. The school blossomed again, adding secondary classes and establishing itself as a respected institution. The demand for places at Paya Lebar Methodist Girls’ Secondary School grew, prompting the move to its current location on Lorong Ah Soo in 1986. This move also marked the creation of two separate schools: PLMGS (Primary) and PLMGS (Secondary). The Lorong Ah Soo campus provided a larger space and enhanced facilities, but change was still on the horizon. In 2005, the secondary school temporarily relocated to Serangoon North Avenue 1 for upgrades under the PRIME Programme. The school returned to its renovated Lorong Ah Soo home in 2007. This marked a significant turning point, officially reopened by Minister Teo Chee Hean. The reborn campus symbolized the school’s commitment to providing a modern and enriching learning environment. Paya Lebar Methodist Girls’ Secondary School has garnered numerous accolades, including the School Distinction Award, Best Practice Awards, and the prestigious School Excellence Award. The school’s vibrant arts culture shines through its designation as the East Zone Centre of Excellence for Creative Arts, and its 2015 National Arts Education (BLAZE) Award. In 2016, PLMGS celebrated a century of educating young women. The school’s legacy is etched not just in its physical location, but in the countless lives it has touched, shaping generations of women who have made their mark on Singapore.
