The story of Partido de San Miguel begins with General Ángel Pacheco’s vast land. Adolfo Sourdeaux, a French Argentine agronomist, founded San José del Pilar here on May 18, 1864.
Initially, it was part of Pilar Partido. Soon after, the area was subdivided. Then the town was renamed San Miguel. This marked the beginning of its journey as a distinct entity.
In 1870, a significant development occurred. The Buenos Aires-Pacific Railway line was built through the town. This boosted connectivity and spurred growth. President Domingo Sarmiento’s education program led to the opening of the first schools.
San Miguel became the county seat for the newly created General Sarmiento Partido in 1889. Later, in 1994, General Sarmiento Partido was subdivided. San Miguel then became the county seat for its own partido.
The population of Partido de San Miguel was about 281,120 in 2010. The area spans approximately 83 square kilometers. Its location is about 32 km from Buenos Aires.
Over time, Partido de San Miguel transitioned. It evolved from a rural community into a suburban area. High-rise buildings emerged. This rapid urbanization has brought changes. The village character diminished a little. The infrastructure faced strain.
