What’s in a name? The Furze Wren, a seemingly quaint pub nestled right here in Bexleyheath, holds within its walls a story as fascinating as its namesake. Now, the Furze Wren isn’t just a whimsical title. It’s a nod to a remarkable discovery made in 1773 by Doctor John Latham. Imagine, a previously unknown bird discovered right here on Bexley Heath! This small, dark, long-tailed warbler with a fondness for furze bushes was dubbed the Dartford Warbler, but its local charm earned it the moniker “Furze Wren”. Sadly, this little bird almost disappeared in the 1960s. However, its resilience mirrored the pub’s own tumultuous journey. You see, before its transformation into the family-friendly establishment you see today, The Furze Wren was known as a Lloyds No. 1 bar. It was a place of wild nights, with a reputation that reached a boiling point on Christmas Eve of 2006. An incident involving police intervention, flying glasses, and even police dogs from Croydon brought the pub to the brink of closure. This event, however, triggered a phoenix-like rebirth. Wetherspoons, the owners, stepped in with a swift renovation. Gone were the echoes of late-night revelry, replaced by the clinking of glasses and the murmur of conversation you hear today. The Furze Wren stands as a testament to change and renewal, just like the resilient little bird that inspired its name.
