St Ignatius Catholic Church has its roots in a time of significant social change. This was after Catholic emancipation. Industrial growth, urbanization, and immigration were reshaping London. Recognizing the growing Catholic population in Stamford Hill, Cardinal Herbert Vaughan invited the Jesuits to establish a parish here. This was in 1892.
Imagine the early days. The first Mass was held in Morecambe Lodge. It was a large house on this very site. Soon, the need for a dedicated church became clear. The Jesuits chose St. Ignatius of Loyola, their order’s founder, as the church’s namesake.
The construction of St Ignatius Catholic Church happened in two phases, primarily for financial reasons. The first section, including the sanctuary, opened in 1903. The exterior was completed in 1911. Benedict Williamson, the architect, had a fascinating background. He converted to Catholicism and became a priest. Before that, he designed several churches in southeastern England.
Williamson drew inspiration from the early Middle Ages. He also considered the needs of the 20th century. The old churches of Spain, France, and Belgium influenced him. Notice the Belgian bricks on the exterior. They resemble those used in old Bruges churches.
Step inside St Ignatius Catholic Church. You’ll find the interior embellishments were finished in 1925. Admire the mosaic work. The Stations of the Cross, the Sanctuary, the Sacred Heart Chapel, and the Lady Chapel display fine craftsmanship. The Chapel of St. Joseph is at the back of the church. It honors the parishioners who died in World War I. Their names are inscribed on the altar’s front.
