Hidden within the bustling heart of Chicago’s Austin neighborhood lies Cottonwood Park. It’s a small park, just 0.24 acres. But don’t let its size fool you. Cottonwood Park holds a unique story. Cottonwood Park officially received its name in 1998. The park itself, however, dates back to 1973. The Chicago Park District, with help from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, acquired the land. They envisioned a vibrant community space. Today, Cottonwood Park features a playground, complete with slides, swings, and climbing structures. A tire swing adds a touch of classic playground fun. It’s a place where children’s laughter echoes. The park’s name, Cottonwood, evokes images of majestic trees. This imagery holds a historical connection to the area. Not far from the present-day park, near the intersection of Central Avenue and Race Street, stood five enormous cottonwood trees. Local lore suggests these were “Indian trail trees”. Native Americans planted them to mark a significant travel route. One particularly massive cottonwood stood directly in the intersection. It met a dramatic end in 1874. During a fierce storm, a lightning strike felled the giant tree. Though the original cottonwoods are gone, their legacy lives on in Cottonwood Park. It’s a quiet reminder of the area’s rich history, nestled amidst the urban landscape.
