Were you aware that Mühlburg almost became the capital of Baden? This vibrant district in Karlsruhe has a history richer than you might imagine. Mülhburg stands as the second sub-center of Karlsruhe. It boasts bustling business and shopping opportunities. Its story dates back to 1248 when it was first mentioned as Mulenberc.

Let’s journey back to a time when the Rhine was untamed. Picture a castle standing proudly where Mülhburg now thrives. The Markgrafen of Baden built it. They likely used it to collect tolls where a Roman road crossed the Alb river. Around 1258, the castle Mulnberg was mentioned. But it’s uncertain whether the castle or the mill came first.

In 1670, Mülhburg was granted city rights. This was intended to attract craftsmen. However disaster struck in 1689 during the War of the Palatine Succession. French troops destroyed Mülhburg and its magnificent moated castle. King Louis XIV ordered the ruin of Baden. The castle was never rebuilt. Its stones were used for the Karlsruhe Palace. Because of this new city Mülhburg lost importance.

Mülhburg became part of Karlsruhe in 1886. But it gained the area of the later Rhine harbor. In 1901, the Rheinhafen Karlsruhe opened in Mülhburg.

Although the castle and mill are gone, Mülhburg retains its spirit. A memorial plaque at the Entenfang recalls its past glory. Carl Benz was born here. He invented the first automobile. Mülhburg is also home to the Seldeneck’sche Freigut. Marie Luise Kaschnitz lived here. She was a famous writer. She lived with her grandfather. The Tempel cultural center is nearby. The Catholic Church St. Peter and Paul is another landmark. The Evangelical Karl-Friedrich-Gedächtniskirche is also important.

Today Mülhburg is a vibrant part of Karlsruhe. It blends history with modern life. So, as you explore Mülhburg remember its past. Think about the castle, Carl Benz, and the people who shaped this unique place.
