Yellow Bluff’s story is deeply intertwined with the military history of the area. Specifically, it relates to nearby Fort Baker. In 1850, President Millard Fillmore established The Lime Point Military Reservation. This was a strategic move for coastal defense. Yellow Bluff would have been a key part of this defense network.
Initially named the Lime Point Military Reservation, the area was renamed Fort Baker in 1897. This renaming honored Edward Dickinson Baker. He was a former U.S. Senator from Oregon. Baker tragically lost his life leading Union troops in the Civil War.
Between 1872 and 1876, four barbette batteries were constructed near Yellow Bluff. These were at Point Cavallo, on the ridge above Lime Point, and on Gravelly Beach. These batteries formed a line of defense. This ensured that any hostile ships entering the bay would face a formidable response.
By 1901, four modern coastal artillery batteries were completed. They were strategically positioned from Point Cavallo to Point Bonita. The 91st Division earned the nickname “The Wild West Division”.
During World War II, Fort Baker took on a significant role. It became the Mine Command Headquarters. Its mission was to lay protective minefields across the Golden Gate. By 1945, the waters around Yellow Bluff were laced with 481 submerged mines. This created a dangerous obstacle for any enemy vessels.
Today, Yellow Bluff is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Many of the military-built structures still stand. They offer a glimpse into the area’s past.
