Hidden within Bremen’s Kattenesch district lies St. Hildegard, a modern church with a story to tell. St. Hildegard wasn’t always the brick structure you see today. Before 1983, the Catholic community here gathered in a humble wooden “Schwedenkirche,” a temporary church generously provided by the Bremen Evangelical Church. Imagine attending mass in a school hall, the echoes of children’s laughter still lingering in the air. Then picture the arrival of the Schwedenkirche, a beacon of hope and a testament to interfaith cooperation. St. Hildegard officially became its own parish in 1972, separating from Herz Jesu in Bremen-Neustadt. This marked a significant moment for the growing Catholic community in Kattenesch. The current St. Hildegard church building was finally consecrated on June 12, 1983, by Bishop Vicar Theodor Kettmann. Now a permanent fixture, St. Hildegard serves the residents of Kattenesch, Kattenturm, and Arsten. Inside these walls, the community celebrates mass, offers prayers, and continues to build its shared history. The church’s address, Alfred-Faust-Straße 45, places it amidst the daily lives of the people it serves. St. Hildegard also plays a role in the youngest generation’s lives. A kindergarten sits on the church grounds, further embedding St. Hildegard within the community’s fabric. As you stand before St. Hildegard, remember the journey from school hall to wooden church to the present day. It’s a story of growth, resilience, and the enduring power of faith within a community.
