Community of Christ

In 1872, a beacon of faith emerged amidst the growing pains of a young nation. The Community of Christ, then known as the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, took root. This church, right here in Chicago, would carve its own path within the Latter Day Saint movement. The Community of Christ traces its origins back to Joseph Smith’s founding of the Church of Christ in 1830. Following Smith’s death in 1844, a period of disorganization ensued. His son, Joseph Smith III, would later formally assume leadership in 1860. This marked a new chapter, distinguishing the Community of Christ from other branches. The Community of Christ distinguishes itself from other Latter Day Saint denominations in several key ways. They embrace a more traditional understanding of the Trinity. They reject the concepts of exaltation and the traditional Mormon plan of salvation, instead emphasizing salvation by grace. The Community of Christ champions peace and justice as core tenets of its faith. This is evident in the daily prayer for peace held at the Independence Temple, the church’s headquarters. It’s also reflected in their International Peace Award. The Community of Christ also promotes a unique concept of Zion. It’s not tied to a specific location but is seen as a way of life. This Zion is a pursuit of Christ-centered communities. Did you know that the Community of Christ has a unique approach to scripture? They recognize the Bible as foundational. However, they also consider the Book of Mormon and the Doctrine and Covenants as additional witnesses to Christ’s ministry. Interestingly, they don’t mandate a specific level of belief in these texts. They encourage members to engage with them thoughtfully and apply their interpretations to their lives. The Community of Christ has always been progressive. They ordained women into the priesthood in 1984, a significant step towards inclusivity.
