Perhaps you’ve heard of it. Nordwestmecklenburg sits nestled in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Today we explore its history. It’s a district with a story shaped by ice and time.

Nordwestmecklenburg lies on the Baltic Sea coast. Schleswig-Holstein borders it to the west. Look around and imagine the triangle formed by Lübeck, Rostock, and Schwerin. That roughly marks Nordwestmecklenburg’s location.

This district wasn’t always as we see it now. In 1994, a merging of districts created Nordwestmecklenburg. Gadebusch, Grevesmühlen, and Wismar joined together. Smaller parts of Sternberg and Schwerin-Land also contributed. The district underwent further reform in 2011 when it merged with Wismar. Citizens decided the name by referendum.

The land itself tells a tale of ice ages. Envision the landscape. The Weichsel Ice Age sculpted this area. End moraines run east to west. Some rise over 100 meters high. These formations are from the Frankfurt and Pomeranian stages. Meltwater channels carve north to south. Notice the Stepenitz and Maurine rivers. See the basin of the Schwerin Lake.

Consider the smaller details. Sölle, water-filled hollows, dot the fields. Oser, long sand ridges, stretch across the land. These too are glacial remnants.

The coat of arms symbolizes Nordwestmecklenburg’s heritage. A black bull’s head represents Mecklenburg. A bishop’s staff stands for the dioceses of Ratzeburg and Schwerin. Red and white signify the Hanseatic city of Wismar. Heinz Kippnick designed this coat of arms. It was granted in 1996.

Nordwestmecklenburg is a blend of history and nature. It is a place shaped by ice and united by its people. Take a moment to appreciate this unique corner of Germany.
