What if a place could embody the spirit of innovation? Jens Nielsens Plads does just that. This square, located in front of Svanemøllen Station, wasn’t always called Jens Nielsens Plads. It was once just an unnamed space on Østerbrogade.

A citizen proposed a change. The Vejnavnenævnet, or street name committee, agreed. They thought Jens Nielsens Plads fit perfectly. In December 2017, it officially became Jens Nielsens Plads. The city even celebrated with coffee and pancakes.

But who was Jens Nielsen? Jens Freddy Nielsen was a Danish architect and designer. He specialized in industrial design. From 1971 to 1992, he was the design chief at DSB, the Danish State Railways. His design concepts gained international recognition.

Nielsen shaped almost everything for DSB. This included typography, signs, trains like the IC3, and station buildings such as Høje Tåstrup Station. He received awards and co-founded the Dansk Designråd, the Danish Design Council.

Think about Copenhagen’s stations. Can you recall the font, colors, and uniforms at the central station? What about the S-train signs? Imagine them suddenly being black or blue. Could you hear the clatter on the railway ferries? Or the sound of the flap signs at the stations? These images and sounds reflect Jens Nielsen’s vision.

Jens Nielsen had a special connection to Svanemøllen Station. A tree stands in front of the station. It was planted in 1992 to honor him. Nielsen also lived near the station.

His family supported naming the square after him. His widow and family attended the inauguration. The mayor noted that Østerbro meant a lot to them. He emphasized the importance of Copenhageners feeling at home and being part of a larger story. He also said that the tree in his memory would now have the address Jens Nielsens Plads 2.

Before the naming, the square’s address was Østerbrogade 246. Now, it’s Jens Nielsens Plads 2. This small change marked a significant tribute to a man who shaped Copenhagen’s visual identity.

So, as you stand here at Jens Nielsens Plads, remember the man behind the designs. The square isn’t just a place. It’s a reminder of how design impacts our daily lives. It’s a tribute to a man who made Copenhagen a little more iconic.
