Gazing at Brøndbyøster Kirke, can you sense the weight of centuries? This unassuming church, built around 1150 of fieldstone and limestone, stands as a testament to time. Brøndbyøster Kirke is among Denmark’s oldest existing churches. It has witnessed the ebb and flow of life in this quiet corner of Brøndbyøster village for over 800 years. Imagine a small village gathering within its walls. Back then, 85 seats were plenty. Today, Brøndbyøster Kirke continues to serve its community, a beacon of faith and tradition. The church’s history is not without its scars. During the Swedish wars in the 17th century, Brøndbyøster Kirke suffered greatly. Swedish soldiers occupied it, using the sacred space as both stable and barracks. The damage was so extensive that authorities considered demolishing the church. But the resilient villagers refused to let their beloved church disappear. They rallied, rebuilding it with their own hands. By 1667, Brøndbyøster Kirke was restored, ready to serve its community once more. Look closely at the two large brass candlesticks and the chalice. They date back to 1667, tangible reminders of the community’s unwavering spirit. Initially, Brøndbyøster Kirke served as the main church for both Brøndbyvester and Brøndbyøster. This changed in 1583 when Brøndbyvester became the main parish, relegating Brøndbyøster Kirke to an annex church. This remained so for almost four centuries until 1955, when Brøndbyøster Kirke once again assumed its role as the principal church of the newly established Brøndbyøster Parish. Brøndbyøster Kirke is more than just a place of worship. It is a vital part of the community’s fabric, a gathering place for people of all ages. It’s a place where history whispers from every stone, a testament to the enduring power of faith and community.
