Why is the Sultan Ahmed Mosque also known as the Blue Mosque? Its breathtaking interior is adorned with more than 20000 handmade Iznik tiles. The Sultan Ahmed Mosque also known as the Blue Mosque is a magnificent structure. It’s one of the most impressive monuments of Ottoman architecture. Located in Istanbul Turkey it stands across from the Hagia Sophia. Its construction began in 1609 and was completed in 1617. Sultan Ahmed I ordered its construction hoping to gain God’s favor after the Peace of Zsitvatorok. This peace was seen as a blow to Ottoman prestige. The mosque’s architect Sedefkar Mehmed Agha created a masterpiece. The mosque’s central dome is 77 feet in diameter and 141 feet high. It’s supported by four large pillars and surrounded by eight smaller cascading domes. The Blue Mosque holds about 10000 worshipers. Hundreds of Muslims use it for daily prayers five times a day. Many more attend on Fridays and during Muslim festivals. The mosque is open to tourists when not in use for worship. Non-Muslims enter through the south entrance. Excavations in the early 20th century uncovered some of these ancient seats in the mosque’s courtyard. The sheer size and the six minarets suggest that Sultan Ahmed intended to rival or surpass the Hagia Sophia. The project faced initial opposition from the ulema. They argued that the sultan should only fund such a project with spoils of conquest. Ahmed I had won no major victories. He had to divert funds from the treasury. The ulema even forbade Muslims from praying at the mosque. Despite the controversy Sultan Ahmed I persevered. The mosque’s grandeur and lavish ceremonies eventually swayed public opinion. The Blue Mosque became one of the most popular mosques in Istanbul. It even gave its name to the surrounding neighborhood now known as Sultanahmet. The Blue Mosque has undergone several restorations. A major restoration in the 21st century revealed that the northwest minaret had shifted. Work to reconstruct and repair it was completed. The mosque’s interior also underwent extensive restoration in the 21st century. The Blue Mosque stands as a testament to Ottoman power and artistic skill.
