“A noble ideal” is how Universitas Islam Indonesia began. It started in Jakarta on July 8, 1945. It was first named Sekolah Tinggi Islam or STI. Let’s delve into the story of Pascasarjana Universitas Islam Jakarta.
The founding of STI reflected Indonesian national figures’ aspirations. They realized most colleges were under Dutch colonial control. STI was born to promote education among the Indonesian people.
Universitas Islam Jakarta, or UID, is an institution. It was established and supported by the Yayasan Wakaf Perguruan Tinggi Islam Jakarta. The foundation is based in Jakarta. UID evolved from Perguruan Tinggi Islam. This college was founded on November 14, 1951.
The founding principles were based on several key points. Indonesia had a predominantly Muslim population. Religious education needed a more structured approach. Centers of Islamic civilization were needed across the country.
An independent nation with a majority Muslim population should have Islamic higher education centers. Indonesia had skilled educators capable of competing internationally. Sending students abroad for education wasn’t feasible for everyone. It was primarily for the wealthy. Post-independence, moral character needed immediate attention.
UID’s beginnings started with a preparatory course. This course was for the Akademi Islam. It aimed to prepare students for higher education. The preparatory course officially began on November 5, 1950. It was held at the Gedung Kesenian Jakarta. The first lecture took place there. To elevate the institution, lectures moved to Gedung Muhammadiyah. This was on Jalan Kramat Raya No. 49. Later, classes were held at Adhoc Stat. This building is now Bappenas on Jalan Imam Bonjol.
About 30 pioneering students were ready. They wanted to enroll in the upgraded Perguruan Tinggi Islam. On November 14, 1951, Perguruan Tinggi Islam Jakarta officially opened. The location was the Adhoc building. This is currently the Bappenas building. Later, it was renamed Universitas Islam Jakarta or UID.
