“Imagine the echoes of ancient traders mingling with the ocean breeze right here at Pura Dalem Karang Tengah Tanjung Benoa.” This temple stands as a testament to Bali’s rich cultural tapestry. It embodies the beautiful fusion of Hindu, Muslim, and Chinese traditions.

Pura Dalem Karang Tengah is located in Tanjung Benoa. It is no ordinary temple. Here, you will find sacred statues of Muslim and Chinese figures. These statues symbolize the deep historical connections between the Balinese people and traders from Java and China.

I Wayan Mintha is the head of the temple. He explains that the temple was originally located on the Tanjung Benoa coast. Over time, coastal erosion threatened the site. The temple was then moved to its current location. This was once a dense jungle.

The exact founding date of Pura Dalem Karang Tengah remains a mystery. Oral traditions speak of strong friendships. They also tell of trade relations with Javanese and Chinese communities. Proof of this lies within the temple. Gifting statues of bronze elephants are still revered. They are used in ceremonies.

The presence of Muslim and Chinese statues highlights the temple’s unique history. It reflects the close relationships between the Balinese and foreign traders. Chinese traders once sailed directly to Benoa Harbor. This fostered strong trade relationships. The Balinese also shared close ties with Javanese Muslims. A tradition of Ludruk dance once existed here. This dance mirrors those found in Java. However, this tradition eventually faded away.

Originally, only one family maintained the temple. Today, 19 families are responsible for its upkeep. Pura Dalem Karang Tengah welcomes everyone to worship. It is a Pura Penyiwi. Locals from Tanjung Benoa frequently come here to pray. The deities worshipped here include Ida Bhatara Karang Tengah. Also honored are Ida Ratu Gede Ngurah Subandar, Ida Dalem Mekah and Ida Dalem Solo.

Interestingly, Pura Dalem Karang Tengah maintains a strict tradition. No pork is ever used in offerings. This rule has been passed down through generations. The temple’s main ceremony takes place every Tumpek Landep.

Another story tells of Pura Dalem Karang Tengah’s original location. It was once a white coral mound. It was surrounded by deep ocean trenches. Five rivers met at this point. They were the Suwung River, Badung River, Candi Darmada River, Jimbaran River and Trora River.

In 1999, the harbor authorities dredged this mound. This interfered with ship docking. A pelinggih penyawang was created. It serves as a symbolic representation of Pura Dalem Karang Tengah. It is located near the southern harbor. It sits beneath a banyan tree. It is close to the Pura Segara Pelabuhan Benoa.

The story of Pura Dalem Karang Tengah is more than just history. It is a living testament to Bali’s inclusive spirit. It is a place where different cultures meet. It is a testament to the enduring power of friendship and trade.
