What’s black and white and loved all over? The Colonnes de Buren! You might know them as Les Deux Plateaux. But whatever you call them, these eye-catching striped columns in the Cour d’Honneur of the Palais Royal are hard to miss. Commissioned in 1985, this art installation was the brainchild of French artist Daniel Buren. He wanted to create a space that interacted with the grand Palais Royal. The result? A striking grid of 260 columns, each adorned with his signature black and white stripes. They vary in height, some towering above while others stand at knee level. This creates a playful maze of perspectives. Look closely. The columns are made from two types of marble. White Carrara marble, like Michelangelo used, and black and white marble from the French Pyrenees. This blend of materials connects the modern art with France’s artistic heritage. Although now a beloved Parisian landmark, the Colonnes de Buren initially sparked controversy. Imagine, residents halted construction just days before completion! They argued that the modern design clashed with the classical architecture of the Palais Royal. Over time, however, Parisians embraced Buren’s work. Today, this playful installation delights visitors of all ages. It’s become a stage for impromptu photoshoots, a playground for children, and a meeting point for friends. So, take a moment to wander among these mesmerizing columns. Feel the smooth marble, observe the play of light and shadow, and let your imagination run wild.
