Was there ever a sweeter spot in Marseille than the Saint-Louis district? Probably not, especially given its sugary past. Let me tell you about the Raffineries de Sucre de Saint-Louis, a place that once filled the air with the sweet scent of molasses and the rumble of machinery. This factory, right here in Saint-Louis, wasn’t just any factory. It was a sugar empire. Founded in 1866 by Henri Bergasse after he acquired the existing Emsens refinery, it quickly absorbed its rival, the Saint-Charles refinery, just six years later. This Saint-Louis sugar refinery became a landmark. The Saint-Louis refinery supplied sugar for everything. From the sugar cubes in your café au lait to the massive sacks shipped to chocolate factories and yogurt makers, Saint-Louis sweetened the lives of Marseillais and beyond. The factory even had a special liquid sugar line catering to specific clients, like the pharmaceutical industry. This line, interestingly enough, still operates today, a small but enduring testament to the refinery’s legacy. The factory wasn’t static. It constantly evolved. It underwent a major modernization between 1946 and 1954, boasting twelve state-of-the-art Chambon production lines. It achieved ISO 9001 certification in 1995. It continually updated its equipment, from new silos to improved syrup filtration and an eco-friendly biological purification station. Sadly, the main refining operation ceased in 2015. Yet, the Saint-Louis site didn’t disappear entirely. In 2022, Brownfields acquired the site, breathing new life into the space. While the large-scale sugar production is gone, the liquid sugar operation and its six employees remain. The site is envisioned as a mixed-use development, perhaps a business park, a distribution hub, or even a film studio. The Saint-Louis sugar refinery was more than just bricks and mortar. It was a vital part of Marseille’s industrial heritage, a testament to innovation and adaptation, and a sweet reminder of a bygone era.
